If you have been moved by the portrayal of John Henry Holliday in Mary Doria Russell's novel DOC, please consider making a donation in his memory to the Smile Train.
Smile Train is the world's leading cleft charity focusing on a "teach a man to fish" philosophy. Smile Train teaches, utilizes, and empowers local surgeons and health professionals to provide free cleft surgery and follow-up care to hundreds of thousands of children around the world. Each surgery costs as little as $250, but any contribution large or small will make a difference. Mary Doria Russell will match the first $15,000 donated by her readers.

The Estes Valley Library in Estes Park, Colorado is pleased to make this donation in honor of Mary Doria Russell. DOC is our One Book One Valley community read this fall, and this extraordinary novel is inspiring a six-week festival of discussion, storytelling, films--and a visit by Mary Doria Russell herself. Cheers to DOC and to Smile Train.

In appreciation for MDR's time spent at the Hudson Library last evening. Also, for many hours of reading, rereading, staying up all night - absorbed and fascinated!
You have enriched my life in wondrous ways by stimulating my curiosity and paving new paths of discovery. I am honored to share in your mission. |

We've donated to The Smile Train in the past after seeing a very moving documentary about it - maybe it was an HBO presentation. I don't remember. I'm really pleased to be encouraged this way - with a matching fund - to help these children who travel so far in fear and dragging self-esteem.
Thank you, Mary, for making this your beneficiary. |
